GREENHOUSE DESIGNS
There are
a number of alternative greenhouse designs available. Some are practical and some are considered to be attractive but can prove very impractical to work in. The standard rectangular or square shaped design is mostly offered with either sloping sides or the more traditional straight sides. Other options are the octagonal and dome shapes, the curved eaves or barn style roofs. Since the 1950s most manufacturers supplying their greenhouses to amateur and professional growers throughout the UK have known that to cope with deep snow loading and high wind pressure, experienced in some parts of the UK their greenhouse, roof
pitches must be 25 degrees or more. As a general rule the flimsier the frame the steeper the roof pitch has to be. |

ADVICE
Without any doubt the STANDARD SQUARE OR RECTANGULAR HIGH STRAIGHT
SIDED greenhouse is by far the most practical for both plants and people
achieving the best growing results. On the question of quality and strength, one
manufacturer offering cheap greenhouses with flimsy frames actually provides a
sticker to affix to the greenhouse which warns you that snow must be cleared
from the roof during the winter. This is because when snow freezes it weighs a
great deal and could make the roof become unsafe.
Other shapes such as rectangular sloping sides, Octagonal, and Dome have the
advantage of good all round light. However these multi sided or circular shaped
greenhouses do have the disadvantage of restricting working space.
The barn type roof design can look attractive and tasteful but BEWARE that the
structure with the green plastic/Resin frame is not tried and tested over time
and therefore you should be wary of an investment in a greenhouse using this
material. The aluminium version is quality but expensive and does not
have the bolt groove on the inside for fitting the many accessories on the
market.
